I have a 79 fx shovelhead that is hard to find neutral and clunky to shift. Had a pro adjust my brand new clutch assembly but is no different. Is this normal? Can it be better?

Optional Information:
1979 1/2 harley davidson fx 1340 shovelhead

Already Tried:
Adjusted clutch after installing all new barnett plates and discs, and new basket and hub. Inspected tranny gears and rotary shifter ( inside cowpie). Still won't shift into neutral easily and really kicks hard into first.

Greetings,

hard neutrals are a common HD problem.
It is mostly related to the shifter
cam assembly and it's design.
There is a very narrow notch for
the neutral position. This makes
it very hard to get the shifter cam to stop
in the neutral position.
Of course the clutch has to be adjusted
properly, which you have done.
The only real fix for this problem
is possibly a Baker or such brand
transmission which uses a drum type
shifter and redesigned shifter cam
for smoother shifts.
This is a HD quirk that most people
just adapt to unfortunately because
of the cost. It still affects some
of the newer bikes, thanks HD ;)
