Can I repack the wheel bearings on my '85 Honda 250ES ...

Can I repack the wheel bearings on my '85 Honda 250ES (Big Red) or must I replace them ? If so, how do I get them out without damage to the seals ?

Replace the seals if you replace the bearings. Due to the age of them, the seals are going to be bad anyhow and there is no way to save them if you remove the bearings.

The front wheel should have sealed bearings. They may only have outer seals, but you will get longer life if you use double shielded bearings. There is no way a single shielded bearing will hold up in an ATV ridden in the mud.

The bearings in the final drive case are not sealed of course because they use the gear oil to lubricate them. If the unit is leaking gear oil then the seals need to be replaced. If there is play in the rear axle, then the bearings and seals should be replaced.

You can get complete bearing and seal kits from many sources. Dennis Kirk and ebay are just to name a few. You get everything you need and save money.
