Hi,

I would recommend a Suzuki SV650. Another way to go is a Ninja 250 or a Ninja 500. Whatever you do don't let him get a sports bike like the R6, GSXR600, CBR600RR, Ninja 636, etc. Those bikes are so fast that they can be faster than an inexperienced rider can react and many times new riders are killed on these machines. Another thing about those bikes is they tend to make riders "push" beyond their limits which causes the same thing in the end.

A SV650 is a great bike for transportation, still goes pretty fast for a new rider, is cheap and gets good gas mileage. They also run forever and are easy to repair should they break. Insurance is also cheap as they are not considered "sport bikes" that people tend to wreck.

Let me know if you need more help or have more questions!
