I have a ''98 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500. I struck a rock
Sent to Motorcycle Experts June 03 12:51 AM

I have a ''98 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500. I struck a rock with the lower engine case and lost all the oil within 5 minutes. I managed to shut down in time. I had thought "oil pan" but looking in the repair catalog I see no oil pan. Is the block damaged badly or might this be just a seal.

Optional Information:

Already Tried:
Physical examination...damage not visible...but all the oil leaked out. Impact area was the front, lower part of the engine

You are right. There is not an oil pan on this model. There is however oil lines. It is possible that one of these have been punctured. A seal? Hopefully...

It would take a great force to crack the crank case with a rock. Great enough to throw you off of the bike.

If it is the case. It may be possible to weld or reconstruct although it is not recommended due to the likeliness of it coming apart, oil soaking the rear tire and causing an accident. The cases are sold together as a unit because of the precision cut to make halves.

Dear Glenn...thanks for your answer. The bike is now at a shop and will be evaluated tomorrow (06/05/08). Since the shop and owner are new to me I appreciate your evaluation and can use it as a guide to what the shop tells me. I'll let you know what that feedback is, if you wish.
I may have another question on a separate vehicle in a few days, if so can I ask for you directly on this system?
Once again, thank you for your time.
